More & More Animals

I don’t think theres one kind of animal we haven’t seen this past week. On Wednesday, the residents took their first trip to the Mohawk High School in Sycamore, OH to see farm animals that the FFA brought to their school. That same day, later that evening, the residents took their second trip to the local fairgrounds for a Circus which had a boxing kangaroo named “Jack”. Then the following day, the residents took their final trip for the week to the Columbus Zoo. What a week we had!

A New Raised Garden!

We have been busy with our new raised garden. Executive Director Hugh Jaynes constructed it for our residents so they can garden without having to bend. We have planted many flowering seeds: cosmos, marigolds, forget-me-nots, nasturtiums; lettuce, cherry tomatoes, green peppers, banana peppers and chives. Jane Perry, Judy Clavens, Rosemary Fitzpatrick , and Andy Boyd are all resident volunteers who take care of the garden– watering, weeding, transplanting, etc! We want to thank them. We have had our Memory Care residents come to the garden to help out or just enjoy the relaxing atmosphere– fresh air, lovely breezes and shade provided by the huge trees.

Two Suprise Guests

What’s better than having not one but two Special Guest! In the afternoon. Mary and Bob Fry “Melody Road” on Fostoria, OH sang several older country music including songs by Patsy Kline, Garth Brookes, and the king Elvis Presley. Their songs sounded incredible on the guitars as well. In the evening, Harold Fitz of Bucyrus, OH sang beautiful inspirational music that the residents absolutely loved.

Senior Spring Spectacular!

On Wednesday The Renaissiance Theater in Mansfield hosted their annual “Senior Spring Spectacular.” This year we took 6 residents and went for brunch at Denny’s and then went to enjoy the performance. The theater was packed with Seniors wanting to listen to the music and hoping to win a door prize! This year there was a quartet performance, a “Patsy Cline” performance, and a piano performance. We all had a wonderful afternoon!

Happy Mothers Day

What a beautiful amazing day Mothers Day brought us. You couldn’t ask for better weather. Families where coming in and out all day taking their mothers out for lunch with the entire family. We are all blessed to have our mothers in our lives and miss those who have past. To celebrate, we prepared a special meal for lunch which included Chicken Marsala, Carrots, Baked Potatoes, Roll, Spring Green Fruit Salad, Raspberry Roll. Afterwards, we where blessed to have “One Voice”, a country and southern gospel music mininstry grace us with their presents.

Pasta Bar

There is nothing the residents enjoy more during meal times than looking at a beautiful set up buffet. We do our best to make each and everyone one look incrediable with a variety of choices. Today, one of the residents favorite buffet was the Pasta Bar. As shown in the photo above, the residents were able to watch their food get prepared right in front of them. They had three different sauce choices, two different noodles to choose from, and five different toppings. Along with thier pasta, they had the choice of 3 different salads and two different desserts.

Special Guest ~ The Washboard Band!

Do you remember when back in the day, most people had to use washboards because washers were not invented at that time. Could you image using a washboard for anything besides washing clothes. Well, these people have. A group of Tiffin, OH residents put together what they call a “Washboard Band”. The name of the band explains it all! By looking at the snap shots below, you can see for yourself that they actually make music out of using washboards and the resident’s absolutely loved it. Several residents wouldn’t even sit down because they were having so much fun dancing around the room.

Baking Cookies!!

Put five lovely ladies in a room with an oven, and what do you get? A batch of delicious cookies! This Saturday we had a cooking class! We baked gingerbread cookies. The lovely ladies of Summit had a blast. While the cookies were baking and the timer was ticking, we discussed our favorite cookies. Once the aroma of the baking gingerbread cookies filled the air, they suddenly became everyone’s favorite. “Letting them cool” after we pulled them out of the oven, “is the hardest part”, one of our residents exclaimed. After the cookies cooled, the cooks feasted on them. Then we passed them out to the rest of the residents. Our baking class was a success. The cooks showed off their talents, and the residents gladly ate the results!

Time to feed the Birds!

With the help of Visiting Nurse Association of Ohio, Chris Willford (Business Development Manager), we put together several small bird feeders maded from twigs of a wreath with peanut butter and bird seed. Our Special Guest enlighted our residents with such a fun project, they had requested for him to schedule another date for next month to come in.

Outdoor Sunshine!

Ahhhhh….Warm summer weather! After what seemed to have been a cold winter weekend, Monday brought us summer weather with a high of 72. If you drove by Westbrook, you would notice residents taking walks around the building or rocking in the chairs on the front porch drinking lemonaide. However, before stepping outdoors today, the residents helped the kitchen staff prep for tonights supper. Five residents gathered after lunch to help prepare and bake sugar cookies. What fun they have.

Speical Dance & Vocal Performances

We enjoyed a special performance by the Douce Dance Studio. Once a year the students visit several area Assisted Living & Nursing Homes and Orchard Park was on the list. The students danced a variety of dances – from hip hop to ballet.

There is also a group of local businessmen called “United in Harmony” that came and sang for us! Many residents sang along to tunes from oldies to hymns. The group certainly knows how to have fun and Orchard Park cannot wait for them to come back again!

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month. We have students from the local autism school visit us every Thursday. This is our intergenerational program. The day starts with the students joining us for lunch and then participation in a 1:00 avctivity. The most common impairment for autism is socializing. The students always have a question of the day for the residents. As a result the residents are helping the students to communicate and the students are helping us to contribute our time to help the the community. Spending time with the students makes the residents feel like a child again. We held an appreciation pizza party for the students following an award ceremony recognizing each student and teachers with a certificate. Some of the residents added thier own words to show thier greatfulness.We ended the ceremony with a big drum circle with all kinds of unique instruments performed by the students and the residents.

Red Hat Ladies

Although the Lion’s Club was unable to meet with us here at Westbrook Assisted Living and Memory Care this month, the Red Hat Ladies were more than happy to have their monthly group meetings at our facility. For most of the Red Hat Ladies, they had never been inside our facility and we were excited to give them a grand tour. They conducted their meeting which took about two hours as we provided a delicious meal including baked chicken breast, green beans, mash potatoes and gravy, dinner roll, cesar salad, and strawberry shortcake. Unfortunetly the camera was not avaiable for a snapshot of the Red Hat Ladies.

Florence’s Tea Party!

Florence’s Tea Party!!

My Activity volunteer, Florence Lombardi, heads North for the summer like so many snowbirds around here in Florida. Before she left, though, she wanted to throw a special tea party for some of our residents.

We used Anderson Gardens as the perfect spot for the party. We brought out tables and chairs, lacy tablecloths, parasols, silver tea set, tea pots and tea cups and saucers, plates of cookies and cakes, vases of flowers, and lovely dishes. The day was overcast which was nice- a cool breeze and not too hot. Florence brought relaxing mood music and each resident was given a large brimmed hat covered with flowers to wear. At each place setting under each tea cup was a number that corresponded to a gift. Florence made most of them- lovely jewelry with tiny shells and shark’s teeth from the Gulf of Mexico!

There was lots of camaraderie and chit-chat as we all put out our pinkies and sipped the various herbal, green, black teas and coffee made available by Florence. It was so nice to see all the smiles and hear all the laughter. Florence also brought with her two friends to help serve the residents. These two ladies, Lill and Barb, worked very hard to make each attendee feel welcome and pampered.

We served 14 residents who RSVP’d to the invitation. Everyone had a wonderful time and soon everyone was wishing they had responded to the invitation after hearing how special the day was!! One resident told me it was nice to feel like a woman again!!

I would like to thank Florence, on behalf of all our residents, for her kindness in making everyone feel special and throwing such a wonderful and memorable tea party! We can’t wait for her return in the Fall!

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

Friday, April 20th we celebrated our Volunteer Appreciation by inviting our volunteers to join us for a luncheon. Afterwards they were all honored and received a certificate and planner set. We thank all of our volunteers from the bottom of our hearts and appreciate all that they do!

29 out of our 43 volunteers were in attendance at the Dessert Buffet last evening. Each volunteer was honored by the Activity Director and Executive Director. Eden Heights is fortunate to have kind and giving volunteers to enhance and support our Activity Department.

Business After Hours

Our local Chamber of Commerce gets together for Business After Hours events on a regular basis. This month, Orchard Park hosted it. It was a great chance to get our name out there and to connect with the community. We enjoyed appetizers, a chocolate fountain with fruit, and door prizes at the end of the night. We also welcomed in Jane Horton for entertainment as well as a Thirty One consultant, a Pampered Chef consultant, and an It Works consultant. It was a wonderful time!

Exercise Enthusiasts

More than 50% of the residents attend exercise class six times a week. Due to the increase interest in exercise and staying healthy the Activity Department will be adding an advances exercise class in May. Compared to a year ago participation has increased by 55%.
